Programme Notes:

Khai Tâm [Spiritual Initiation] is the first composition from the series of twelve works for 29-stringed đàn tranh solo entitled Music of Inner Mind composed by Đặng Kim Hiền between 2015 and 2020. The experimental 29-stringed đàn tranh used in this performance was one of various instruments designed by the composer herself. Khai Tâm and other pieces in the series Music of Inner Mind weave elements of Vietnamese traditional music and sonic capabilities of the experimental đàn tranh to create a world of musical tranquility lingering in space and time.

Khai Tâm là bài thứ nhất trong 12 bài Tâm Nhạc do Đặng Kim Hiền sáng tác cho đàn tranh 29 dây từ năm 2015 đến năm 2020. Tâm Nhạc lưu giữ tinh hoa của dòng nhạc truyền thống và khai mở một thế giới âm thanh êm dịu cho tiếng đàn tranh Việt Nam. Mỗi khúc nhạc là một không gian riêng biệt giúp thân tâm được an tĩnh trước những biến động của cuộc đời. Khai Tâm trình bày những thủ pháp truyền thống căn bản của đàn tranh trên âm vực rộng của 29 dây đàn. Tính cách dịu nhẹ và thanh thản của hơi Xuân cũng chính là linh hồn và phong cách của toàn bộ 12 bài Tâm Nhạc. Để thưởng thức đầy đủ âm thanh trầm bổng của đàn tranh 29 dây, xin nghe qua headphones.

Original music by Dang Kim Hien, except for fragments of melodies from Le Tuan Hung’s Scent of Time played on the shakuhachi [Japanese flute] by Anne Norman.

With Baby cries by Quoc Anh Tran (1996) and Buddhist chants by the monks of Quang Huong Gia Lam Temple (Vietnam)

Dang Kim Hien: dan tranh [zither], dan bau [monochord], dan nguyet [lute], trong com [rice drum], mo [woodblocks], phach tre [bamboo block], wooden clappers, rain stick, electronic crickets.
Le Tuan Hung: Ocarina, temple bell, wind chimes, rain stick, Helix wind roarer and field recordings.

Living as we do in this world, we are bound, or even trapped in many webs of life: webs of love and hate, webs of duties and ambitions, webs of ideals and desires. Is there a way out?

Soạn cho một tác phẩm đa phương diện (nhiều âm thanh kết hợp với hình ảnh), sáng tác này chuyên chở ý niệm về cuộc sống được thể hiện qua bức tranh Kiếp Người của Nhạc sư Nguyễn Văn Đời: Suốt cuộc đời, ai ai trong chúng ta cũng vướng mắc vào những mạng lưới vô hình: Khi thì êm ái, nhẹ nhàng vướng vít như tơ tình, khi lại như những làn sóng điện mãnh liệt cuốn hút ta chạy theo tham vọng và lợi danh, hay là như những mắc xích kẽm gai nặng nề trói buộc ta vào trách nhiệm và bổn phận, lắm lúc lại như những dây độc rắn rít của thành kiến, ganh ghét và hận thù ăn sâu vào và hủy hoại tâm não ta. Những mạng lưới này âm thầm liên kết với nhau và bao trùm cả cuộc đời ta từ lúc sinh ra cho đến ngày xuôi tay nhắm mắt. Có mấy ai tìm được lối ra?

On A Quivering String

for dan bau [Vietnamese monochord]

Composer’s notes:

This composition expresses in sounds the different emotional states that I have experienced during a very happy but difficult period of my life, trying to fulfill working and mothering commitments. My days have been full of contradicting feelings of joy and frustration, of exuberance and tension. These feelings are reflected in the different sonic elements generated from the single string of the dan bau [Vietnamese monochord].

All the sounds and effects were created on the experimental electric dan bau [Vietnamese monochord], designed and built by Mr. Phan Chi Thanh, an experimental instrumental designer in Vietnam.
